I like the use of pseudo-historical arguments. The best one is definitely:
“It took much humiliation inflicted by the Western and Japanese imperialist powers at the turn of the last century before China learnt to shed its old dependency on the scholarly class to shape its future”.
The author conveniently forgets the Communist revolution, and the fact they chose to ignore/purge/chase away the older “scholarly class”.
I always find these pieces entertaining because for they probably make a lot of sense to the uninformed reader…
